An 83 minute independent documentary following a year in the life of Ballet Memphis.

A Ballet Season is an 83 minute independent documentary following a year in the life of Ballet Memphis, a professional dance company in a mid-sized American city. This would prove to be a tumultuous year, and the last full season prior to the Covid pandemic.

We asked for and received, unfettered access to all aspects of what it means to be a ballet company. The dancers’ dedication and their physical pain; the competition and the unselfish camaraderie that exists among the dancers; the hours building costumes; the injuries; the joy and the pain – and the constant pressure to raise money, to meet financial demands….this is what it means to be a ballet company, and this is what we tried to convey in our film. Above all, ballet only works if the seams don’t show. It needs to look effortless but we wanted to pull back the curtain and share the effort with our viewers.
